Haere mai, welcome to the National Monitoring Study of Student Achievement

NMSSA Data for Research | Data Available

NMSSA Data Request Form

NMSSA data can be accessed for secondary analysis by researchers, educators and post-graduate research students. All data is anonymised (i.e. no students or schools are identifiable).

Data are collected about the achievement in each learning area of the New Zealand Curriculum from nationally representative samples of Year 4 and Year 8 students in English-medium state schools. Contextual information from students, teachers and principals via questionnaires is also gathered to understand the factors that are associated with achievement. A specific focus is placed on three key priority learner groups: Maori, Pasifika and students with special education needs. NMSSA Data Available.

Procedure for accessing the data:

1.  Complete the Data Access Request form.
2.  Email to nmssa.earu@otago.ac.nz, with a subject line: NMSSA Data Access Request.
3.  Applications are reviewed by NMSSA, including consultation and approval of the Ministry of Education.
4.  Once approval has been granted, complete and sign the Data Access Contract form
(which includes confidentiality clauses) and email to nmssa.earu@otago.ac.nz.
5.  On receipt of your signed contract, the anonymised data will be released to you.

NOTE: If your application is not accepted, we will provide feedback on the proposal and/or give reasons for the application being declined.
